Such a joyful thing it must be,

to fly.

To spread you wings

and reach the sky.

To look down upon Earth

from on high.

To dance on currents of air and

between the clouds.

To have not a care in the world

except how high you can go.

To see, and be seen, touched only

by the wind.

To touch down when you wish,

and lift off when you want.

Such a freeing thing it must be,

to fly.

Description:

The first lines of this poem came to me as I was sitting in a park, slightly chilled by the wind dancing through my hair and worming its way into my coat. A flash of movement caught my eye, and I glanced up to see a seagull almost dancing in the same wind that was causing me such trouble. And at that moment, I recognized the freedom that flying provides, and wondered, not for the first time, if birds enjoy the wind. If it offers them a chance to play and dance in ways that they don’t normally get to. So, I wrote this poem in an attempt to encapsulate the feeling of freedom and joy that many of us associate with flight.
