The sun is back up again,
Mere seconds ago it was up as well
It shined so bright
It shined through glass,
Onto the petals of flowers,
Under the trees with spring leaves,
And around your eyes
Shining blindingly
The day was light
Only flickers of darkness block those days
The nights flood with colors and kaleidoscopic patterns
A contrast to the glimmer of the day
A soft hue of dawn
Relaxing your eyes for only a moment
Recovering from the strain of day
Entertaining the mind
with galleries of paint:
Van Goh’s starry night cowers at the palette of the world imagined
But the exhibit only lasts the night
For when the day comes,
The eye is forced to look upon
The fixed colors of the world
The paint forever left under your mind
Waiting for the next moment of night
The colors in the night
The blended imagination
The canvas of infinity
The aloof space of night in day
The warmth of the darkness against your eyes
Then
Once again
Light floods through the eye
As the gates to nature open
The sun is back up again
Description:
This poem takes place within the blink of an eye. The entire scene is painted within the time frame of someone blinking. I was inspired by the book "Long Way Down " by Jason Reynolds. The book takes place during an elevator ride as a young boy grapples with inner turmoil over life decisions. I read this book when I was younger, and I found it interesting that so much could happen in such a short period of time. I decided to take that as a challenge to write a poem within such a short timeframe. Therefore, I thought to myself: What is the shortest amount of time that people experience? Then, I remembered the saying, “In the blink of an eye,” and so my poem was born.
