Bare tree branches against a bright, overexposed sky create a stark and serene scene. The black and white filter enhances contrast.

IT was one of those days when the clouds looked so puffy

That the sky appeared impossibly blue and flat. The pandemic was

skeletal by then, so thin I wondered if it had meant anything at all.

That day, I saw a single eye floating in the shroud of clouds

From above, it watched three kids lying on

the sheer side of a hill waiting for their parents to return from the

grocery store. Too soporific to move, too blissful to fall asleep,

while I ran home to fetch a phone to capture it.

But it was already gone and I settled back on the hill.

Shoulder to shoulder with the others.

The wind and the dandelions were the page margins.

The stirred eye in the clouds was raw script.

Whenever I make memories, I always remember what the sky looked like.

My nostalgia loops because it is tamed by the sky.

Description:

COVID-19 was a time that I learned to love fiercely, especially my friends. It was also when I learned what belonging looks like. This poem is a personal reflection on my nostalgia and my wanting to feel like I belong somewhere as I did a few years ago. The last few lines describe my entire childhood because I believe that remembering the weather makes memories much more real and meaningful.
