My, my, my, lady,

that shall forever rest still in my warm chest;

Between the tunnels of air passing through it,

thou, though reside in my lungs,

Steal with my breath every time.

And if thou were ever to conclude that she

herself is less than perfect

and is subservient to Aphrodite,

‘tis the sole day that

I will prove thee wrong

and demolish thy false claims,

with soft words and grand compliments on my heels,

along with any other doubt

that thou is worth any less.

Well because,

my lady,

thy has already now settled for lots less

and blessed my presence with light.

Thou deserves,

not the world,

but all the planets

and all galaxies

and all the bright stars

that gleam in your eyes

when you simply say,

“Hello”

Description:

This is a poem I wrote inspired by Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18. It is told from the perspective of a person who is absolutely infatuated with a woman. The speaker compares her beauty to different pieces of nature with a reference to Aphrodite. This poem is meant to be read aloud to the woman, resembling a profession of love or simple affection. I wrote this poem with the idea of how Shakespeare would have written the beginning of tragedies such as Romeo and Juliet. In there, the man adores the woman, showering her with affirmations of her beauty. Personally, I believe it is sad that books and poems are no longer like this. People deserve to hear compliments.
