Little girl,

You were made for

more

than they say you were.

You were made for:

pushing the limits,

tearing down walls,

and opening gates.

You were made to break boundaries.

Little girl,

You were made to

leave

a mark on this world.

Whether it’s a

name on a street sign,

a statue in a park,

or a painting in a gallery.

Or maybe it’s

a kiss on the forehead,

a whisper in the dark,

a certain flower in a garden.

You were made to be remembered.

Little girl,

One day,

you won’t be so little anymore,

and the world will tell you

that you’re not enough.

They’re wrong.

You will always be enough.

Description:

I wrote this poem for my little sister. The two of us are 14.5 years apart in age, and I ended up with five brothers before she was born, so to me, she’s a little bit of a miracle. This poem is all the things that I want her to know, it’s all the things I wish I had heard growing up, and it’s all the things that I want every little girl to listen and hear while they’re still young enough for it to make a difference. This poem is written in free verse since it allows me to highlight certain lines that might otherwise get lost within other stanzas.
