During days of shadow
When the evening changes,
The dreams of youth are like a candle
Morphing into puddled wax
With a wick of hope of crumbled ash.
Youth mourn the sunny evenings of the past,
The curse of daylight savings.
Escaping to a land far away
Where Sun illuminates the games they play,
Youth wander and have a bawl
Soon crushed by the clock in Fall.
Until then the youth will roam,
Sunny dreamscapes will await
After hours of confined space
The time together is their home.
But at last the clock has ticked!
The darkness of days are in play.
Youth confined, dreams astray,
Dreamscapes are oh so dreary.
The changed time by one hour
Drown the candle of dreams
And rots all hopes of feeling sour.
Fall backward, spring forward
All wish for longer days.
For the youth who want to play,
Curse the dark of fall evenings.
Description:
The poem “Daylight Savings Time” exemplifies how the youth are explicitly impacted by the longer evenings and shorter days. Within this piece, I utilized strong dramatic language and continued symbolism of hopes and dreams as a candle. I hope readers find a connection to this piece or, if not, are enlightened by a new perspective.
